Crime And Thought Punishment

An interesting twist (one of many, many more to be discovered) is buried in this health care law. Some folks are calling for a massive refusal, in December 2013, to pay the fine for not having purchased health insurance. They believe the government would be unable to prosecute tens of thousands of people.

It turns out, that according to the statute itself [ page 131 of the 906 page .pdf Senate bill] :

(A) WAIVER OF CRIMINAL PENALTIES.—In the case of any failure by a taxpayer to timely pay any penalty imposed by this section, such taxpayer shall not be subject to any criminal prosecution or penalty with respect to such failure.

So..... looks like they passed a law, with a fine, for which failure to pay has no penalty. I'm sure they will find a way around this.
