Policy-Driven Deception

"The Science & Public Policy Institute has published an important paper on the manipulations to which surface temperature records have been subjected in order to promote the global warming dogma. It's called Surface Temperature Records: Policy Driven Deception? You should download and read it all; this is the executive summary:

(here are just a few of the key points......)

1. Instrumental temperature data for the pre-satellite era (1850-1980) have been so widely, systematically, and unidirectionally tampered with that it cannot be credibly asserted there has been any significant "global warming" in the 20th century.

2. All terrestrial surface-temperature databases exhibit very serious problems that render them useless for determining accurate long-term temperature trends.

3. All of the problems have skewed the data so as greatly to overstate observed warming both regionally and globally." [Power Line]

GOP Senator Rips Into MSNBC Host For ‘Absurd,’ ‘Dishonest,’ Statements

"On the soon-to-be canceled ‘It’s the Economy’ program on MSNBC on Thursday, co-host Contessa Brewer grilled Republican New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg on his calls to reduce out-of-control government spending: “Which programs are you willing to cut? Are you willing to tell schools, no money for you?” Gregg shot back: “What an absurd statement to make. And what a dishonest statement to make.” [Newsbusters]

Americans finally starting to see through the president's prevarications

" The latest Rasmussen poll demonstrates just how much of America Obama has lost. Why Elitists Fail

"We expect those in government to know how to get things done. They need to understand organizational and political behavior, effective administration, and how to comply with the law.

In his recent book Intellectuals and Society, Thomas Sowell explains how the "anointed" believe that their advanced education and depth of knowledge in one field automatically makes them an authority on any field in which they wield an opinion.

Sowell further explains that the most educated among us know only the smallest fraction of what is to be known. That these highly educated people may know so much more than any one of us does not mean that they know a fraction as much as do all of us." [American Thinker]

The 12 Scams of Obama

From Camelot to Scamalot

"Faced with so many false assurances, exaggerated "hopes," and inflated assertions about not only Obama's health care takeover, but also his radical policies on energy, taxes, the national debt, unemployment, the environment, and the ongoing War on Terror, Bay State voters came to believe that the president is simply deceiving them -- to the point that they were routinely thinking, "You lie."

But using the somewhat softer term of "scam," let us paint a full picture of what is going on here. Let us pose the tough question: "Does this charismatic, smooth-talking, and openly "progressive" (i.e., socialist) President Obama scam just a little, or does he truly scam a lot?"" "No one in the media has brought up the ultimate snub from Pres. Obama during his speech last night. But that single receipt makes up just part of the more than $101,000 taxpayers paid for "in-flight services" – including food and liquor, for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trips on Air Force jets over the last two years" [WND]

A modified, limited course correction, Part Three

"President Obama is expected to propose "a three-year freeze on federal funding that is not related to national security." He will unveil this proposal tomorrow night in his State of the Union address.

The "freeze" appears to be something of a phony. According to the Washington Post, it would not apply to "entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid," "would not restrain funding for the $787 billion economic stimulus package Obama pushed through Congress early last year," would not "apply to a new bill aimed at creating jobs," and would be "unlikely to affect the approximately $900 billion health-care bill." Obama to meet with House Republicans

The House GOP invited Obama this year to speak at its annual retreat, which will be held in Baltimore from Thursday to Saturday. Disgusting. Shameless Liar Pelosi Tries to Pin Obama’s Deficit on Bush & GOP

"It figures. Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats tripled the national deficit in one year. They will likely top that this year.Align Center

Today Nancy Pelosi tried to pin these awful numbers on the GOP.

For the record, during the Bush years, despite the 2000 Recession, the attacks on 9-11, the stock market scandals, Hurricane Katrina, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Bush Administration was able to reduce the budget deficit from 412 billion dollars in 2004 to 162 billion dollars in 2007, a sixty percent drop. In 2004 the federal budget deficit was 412 billion dollars. In 2005 it dropped to 318 billion dollars. In 2006 the deficit dipped to 248 billion dollars. And, in 2007 it fell below 200 billion to 162 billion dollars. During the Bush years the average unemployment rate was 5.2 percent, the economy saw the strongest productivity growth in four decades and there was robust GDP growth. These were amazing accomplishments considering the unexpected challenges. You certainly didn’t read much about this in the press.

But, things changed in 2007. Democrats took over Congress, gas prices started to rise, and at the end of the year and into 2008 several financial institutions started to crumble as the housing bubble began to burst. Of course, it should be noted that President Bush publicly called for the reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac 17 times in 2008 alone before Congress acted. Democrats, on the other hand, blocked reform numerous times. It was later reported after the 2008 election that Bush had nothing to do with the financial crisis. Hoover Institution visiting fellow Scott S. Powell wrote in Barron’s in February of 2009 that the present crisis began in the 1970s, during the Carter administration, with passage of the Community Reinvestment Act to stem bank redlining and liberalize lending in order to extend home ownership in lower-income communities. This risk was acknowledged in the Bush administration’s first fiscal-year budget, released in April 2001. Sadly these warnings were ignored by Congress." [Hot Air]

Dennis Blair testified before Congress that Abdulmutallab should have been questioned by the HIG.

Unions will dodge O's health tax

"Big Labor got some big love from President Obama and congressional Democrats yesterday after they agreed to exempt union workers from the whopping “Cadillac tax” on high-cost health-care plans until 2018.

The sweetheart deal, hammered out behind closed doors, will save union employees at least $60 billion over the years involved, while others won't be as lucky -- they'll have to cough up almost $90 billion.

The 40 percent excise tax on what have come to be called "Cadillac" health-care plans would exempt collective-bargaining contracts covering government employees and other union members until Jan. 1, 2018.

In another major concession to labor, the value of dental and vision plans would be exempt from the tax even after the deal expires in eight years, negotiators said." [NY POST]

Obama Raising Middle Class Taxes by Taxing Banks

"A senior administration official said the tax, which officials are calling a "financial crisis responsibility fee," would apply only to financial companies with assets of more than $50 billion. "The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.

Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in

The report attempts to correlate the migration, north and south, of the tree line with annual tree ring dating so that an actual year can be assigned to a certain location of the Arctic Circle. It means all of the state laws on elections will be overriden by a federal mandate. The feds will tell the states: ’take everyone on every list of welfare that you have, take everyone on every list of unemployed you have, take everyone on every list of property owners, take everyone on every list of driver’s license holders and register them to vote regardless of whether they want to be…’" [Cincinnati Tea Party blog]

Culture of Corruption casualty: Chris Dodd bows out

"Today, Dodd will preempt the voters by removing himself from the running. He’s ending his re-election bid. I’d say good riddance, but Dodd will most likely move on to a lucrative lobbying career a la Beltway toe fungus Tom Daschle or perhaps into a position with the administration of Hope and Change.

Claims controversy is political 'dream come true' for Obama

This article explains why Glenn Beck (and Bill O'Reilly) are wrong in saying that the irrefutable evidence that Obama was Hawaii born is the existence of two separate newspaper birth records published after his birth.

Didn't Work Before...Didn't Work After

President Obama said that "once the suspect attempted to take down Flight 253, it's clear Homeland Security and Aviation Security took all appropriate actions."

The Homeland Security chief [Napolitano] told CNN that “all” flights in the air were notified to take special measures within “an hour to 90 minutes.” According to at least one airline pilot in the air that day, the notification did not happen.

55% Say Better for California To Go Bankrupt Than Be Bailed Out

But most voters have never been fans of any kind of federal bailout, and most continue to oppose a bailout for California, even when told what specific budget cuts may be necessary." [Rasmussen]

Don't Like the Message? Attack the Messenger

"Now, the far left has a new target. Independent pollster Scott Rasmussen is squarely in the crosshairs of left-wing bloggers in an effort to portray him as biased and incompetent. Rasmussen is not a partisan, but because his numbers don't add up to a glowing endorsement of Obama and the Democrats, he's now the target." [The Loft]

As in the following example ..........

The limits of self-reference

".... if Obama's rhetoric has, at one time or another, employed the word "war" in connection with words having some relationship to terrorism, then he must be waging war on terrorism.

If Obama wants to convince an increasingly skeptical public that he takes the fight against terrorism seriously, he needs to change both his posture and his policies. Referring to past speeches won't do the trick." [Power Line]

Why Is Islamberg Now a Ghost Town?

"The Wall Street Journal reports this week that U.S. investigators are discovering that more and more young Muslims are vanishing from mosques, madrassas, and Islamic centers.

Unhealthy Arrogance

"In a sense, this administration is only the end result of a long social process that includes raising successive generations with dumbed-down education in schools and colleges that have become indoctrination centers for the visions of the left. Our education system has turned out many people who have never heard any other vision and who can only learn what is wrong with the prevailing vision from bitter experience.

That bitter experience now awaits them, at home and abroad." [Thomas Sowell]

TSA nominee misled Congress, violated security protocols

"Democrats blamed the attack on Senator Jim DeMint for placing a hold on Barack Obama’s nominee to head TSA, Erroll Southers, even though Obama hadn’t even bothered to nominate Southers until late September, and TSA had nothing to do with the decision to allow Umar Abdulmutallab onto the Northwest flight he attempted to destroy.

Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that DeMint may have done everyone a favor anyway. According to documents obtained by reporter Robert O’Harrow, Southers misled Congress about an incident in which he violated privacy laws to investigate his wife’s lover." [Hot Air]

ObamaCare on Drugs

"Democrats are starting to mash together the Senate and House health-care bills, all of the negotiations taking place in secret. One reason to keep quiet is so voters don't discover items like the Senate's destructive change in the way retiree health benefits are taxed. This is a revenue grab that will cost many retirees their private drug benefit coverage, with knock-on harm for the federal budget and financial markets." [WSJ]

2010 Will Be Worse

The year 2010 is likely to be the pivotal year where pundits stop referring to the recession and begin openly talking about a depression.

Our economic problem is rather simple to describe: There is too much debt relative to income and/or wealth. Below is a single graph that depicts the condition of our economy. It shows total debt of the U.S. as a percentage of GDP from 1870 forward. The debt figure includes all private and public debt. It does not include liabilities associated with unfunded government mandates like Social Security and Medicare. (Note: according to the U.S. trustees of these funds, the present value of the liabilities is about $106 trillion. Including them would boost the ratio below to nearly 1,000%.)

All alternatives will be very painful, and none offer the possibility of a traditional recovery. No matter what alternative is chosen, the country cannot avoid a depression. At this point, "do no further harm" should guide policy.
