We Are Doomed -- Again

"Global warming is far from the first apocalyptic prediction, or even the first based on computer models. The belief that the world is coming to an end appears to be a universal concept based on an innate psychic need." [American Thinker]

Now the (U.K.) Government wants competence tests before you can be a dog owner

"Every dog owner will have to take a costly ‘competence test’ to prove they can handle their pets, under new Government proposals designed to curb dangerous dogs.

ACLU Sues Minnesota Muslim School

"Among other things, the school's principal is an imam and almost all of its students are Muslim. It is housed in a building that was owned originally by the Muslim American Society of Minnesota ........ The study of Arabic is required at the school.

The Arabic comes in handy for the Koranic studies that follow the regular school day.

The ACLU Minnesota has brought a lawsuit challenging the legality of the school's operation on public funds; the lawsuit is pending in federal court in Minnesota." [Power Line]

Handgun Derangement Syndrome Grips Restaurateurs

"A wave of constipated thinking has afflicted some Arizonans after legislators passed a law allowing licensed concealed handguns to be carried into businesses that serve alcohol as long as the licensees consume none. Proprietors have the option to post the "No Firearms" sign, and many have done so. .... To anti-gunners who embrace false security, what's important is how it feels, not what's real. By not having concealed weapons in the same building with their food, restaurant patrons can savor "the sign" just before the killer who laughed at the sign swings into action." [American Thinker]

Thomas Sowell: Economic whodunit

"During bad times, the blame game is the biggest game in Washington. Wall Street "greed" or "predatory" lenders seem to be favorite targets to blame for our current economic woes.

When government policy is mentioned at all in handing out blame, it is usually blamed for not imposing enough regulation on the private sector. But there is still the question whether any of these explanations can stand up under scrutiny." [Thomas Sowell]

A bureaucratic takeover of healthcare

"Pages 25 and 26 of the House version of the health care bill require that when expenses exceed revenues for the "temporary" National High-Risk Pool Program, the secretary of health and human services by herself will "make such adjustments as are necessary to eliminate such deficit, including reducing benefits, increasing premiums or establishing waiting lists."" [American Thinker]

Targeting Health Insurance Companies Not the Answer to Healthcare Reform

"The cost of insurance is merely a reflection of health care cost. Attacking health insurance companies misses the target." [American Thinker]

'My heart, my choice,' Canadian Premier says, defending decision for U.S. heart surgery

"An unapologetic Danny Williams [Newfoundland and Labrador Premier] says he was aware his trip to the United States for heart surgery earlier this month would spark outcry, but he concluded his personal health trumped any public fallout over the controversial decision.

...in December, his doctors told him the problem had become severe and urged him to get his valve repaired immediately or risk heart failure, he said.

"I wanted to get in, get out fast, get back to work in a short period of time," the premier said.

"I would've been criticized if I had stayed in Canada and had been perceived as jumping a line or a wait list. ... I accept that. That's public life," he said."

So he had surgery done at Mt. Sinai in Miami, FL. [Canadian Press]

Knights or Fools?

Obama launches his "Debt Reduction Commission". Wanna bet that after two years of study their report will be as effective as the Grace Commission's report in 1984?

Today is The First Day of The Rest of Your Life Under The Credit CARD Act. Which Means, Get Ready For All Sorts of New Fees.

"Lo some nine months ago, Congress took a politically courageous stand against mom, apple pie, and credit card issuers by supposedly reining in the excesses of the latter (excesses which largely consisted of giving lots of people the ability to purchase goods and services on the automated installment plans otherwise known as credit cards). The goal of the new legislation was to clear the books, start anew, blah blah blah, and hem in the contagion known as excessive credit, which was widely believed to be behind the financial crisis that may or may not be over. And, at the same time, of course, Congress was going to make sure that all Americans had access to the credit that is our god-given birthright. The streets of America are paved with gold MasterCards and all that." [Reason]

Disaster Ahead: Third Party Support from the Tea Party Movement

"This post is going to be blunt… supporting third party efforts in 2010, in most cases, would be a complete disaster for the Tea Party Movement.

If you follow tea party news, you’ve probably seen the announcement that a third party “tea party” officially formed in Nevada and has its own candidate going on the ticket against Harry Reid. But as it turns out, the people behind this effort are strangers within the tea party movement. In fact, we haven’t been able to find anyone who knows them!

In Florida, a third party “Tea Party” was filed and the principles started threatening Florida Tea Party groups in an attempt to get them to stop using the tea party name. Florida tea party activists fired back with a lawsuit of their own." [Tax Day Tea Party]

“When it comes to pinning the blame, let’s pin the blame on the donkey,”

What Does 'Racial Socialism' Sound Like to You?

"The United States today has slipped toward race-based socialism: That's the true name for an overwhelming bias for one race above others, in employment, promotion, and educational opportunities. Our media are constantly stirring the witch's brew of racial grievances, constantly making black people feel aggrieved and white people feel accused. Our schools drive that lesson home with young and innocent kids in a totally ruthless way. Repeat that for twelve years of schooling and TV, and you have a brainwashed kid." [American Thinker]

Barack's Bi-Polar Nuclear Policy

"President Barack Obama recently took drastic steps forward to carry through on his campaign promise to close the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility before it ever opens for business.

Yucca Mountain has been designed as a specialized storage center to keep nuclear waste safely contained in an underground facility deep inside a mountain, long after the material is believed safe and no longer radioactive. The storage center is on a military base almost one hundred miles from civilization (and that's Las Vegas, for what it's worth), in the middle of the Nevada desert." [American Thinker]

Obama's Recession Plan: More Bureaucrats

"As hard-working Americans struggle through one of the worst recessions in U.S. history, one part of the country remains recession-proof: Washington, D.C.

Even though federal tax revenues are down 20 percent and the national debt has ballooned to $12 trillion, President Barack Obama and his allies on Capitol Hill continue to believe that we can borrow and spend our way to prosperity. As part of that plan, they’re using our hard-earned tax dollars to increase the size of government and the salary of bureaucrats." [Newsmax]

Down With Small Business!

"We noted here that the "Miss me yet?" billboard of President Bush that garnered national publicity was paid for by a group of small business owners who consider the Obama administration's policies to be hostile to them. No surprise there--pretty much every small business owner I know feels that way. Still, it was a bit of a shock to see these numbers in USA Today, based on a survey of 884 small businesspeople:" [Power Line]

World may not be warming, say scientists

"The United Nations climate panel faces a new challenge with scientists casting doubt on its claim that global temperatures are rising inexorably because of human pollution.

The temperature records cannot be relied on as indicators of global change,” said John Christy, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a former lead author on the IPCC.

The doubts of Christy and a number of other researchers focus on the thousands of weather stations around the world, which have been used to collect temperature data over the past 150 years.

These stations, they believe, have been seriously compromised by factors such as urbanisation, changes in land use and, in many cases, being moved from site to site." [UK Times On-line]

Jones admitted this weekend that there has been no significant global warming in the last 15 years." [Gateway Pundit]

The Fallacy of "Fairness"

This is the first of an OUTSTANDING four article series.

Here are some excerpts ...... "If there is ever a contest to pick which word has done the most damage to people's thinking, and to actions to carry out that thinking, my nomination would be the word "fair." It is a word thrown around by far more people than have ever bothered to even try to define it.

This mushy vagueness may be a big handicap in logic but it is a big advantage in politics. All sorts of people, with very different notions about what is or is not fair, can be mobilized behind this nice-sounding word, in utter disregard of the fact that they mean very different things when they use that word.

Fairness as equal treatment does not produce fairness as equal outcomes. The confusion between the two meanings of the same word has created enormous mischief, much of it at the expense of lagging groups, who have been distracted from the things that would enable them to catch up. And whole societies have been kept in a turmoil pursing a will o' the wisp in the name of "fairness." " [Thomas Sowell]

Campaign mode doesn't work for governing

"During the campaign, Obama could throw a rhetorical pixie dust over all the difficult choices inherent in governing and the contradictions of his own program, making them fade into a beguiling vision of a sun-lit post-Bush America. This magical realism sustained him until November 2008 -- but couldn't withstand governing." [New York Post]

The end of the IPCC

"Almost daily, we learn about new problems with the formerly respected UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): In their 2001 report, they claimed that the 20th century was "unusual" and blamed it on human-released greenhouse gasses. Their infamous temperature graph shown there, shaped like a hockey stick, did away with the well-established Medieval Warm Period (around 1000AD, when Vikings were able to settle in Southern Greenland and grow crops there) and the following Little Ice Age (around 1400 to 1800AD). Two Canadians exposed the bad data used by the IPCC and the statistical errors in their analysis." [American Thinker]

Those “saved or created” jobs on the block again

"Barack Obama has tried to take credit for saving or creating two million jobs through the intervention of Porkulus last year. Most of the jobs “saved” came from block grants given to states, which used the money to paper over budget gaps instead of rationally examining bloated budgets and looking for opportunities to make cuts. States declared that they saved positions in law enforcement and education with their Porkulus money that were never at risk in the first place rather than the untouched bureaucracies that should have first come under the knife." Backdoor taxes to hit middle class

If you believe that Obama's tax increases are going to apply only to "The Wealthy"...... think again. Read this list of tax changes coming. All federal income tax rates are going up .... taxes on dividends, interest and capital gains are going up. All sorts of tax deductions and breaks are being eliminated for everyone.

"... targeted tax provisions were enacted under the Bush administration's Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. Among other things, the law lowered individual tax rates, slashed taxes on capital gains and dividends, and steadily scaled back the estate tax to zero in 2010.

If the provisions are allowed to expire on December 31, the top-tier personal income tax rate will rise to 39.6 percent from 35 percent. But lower-income families will pay more as well: the 25 percent tax bracket will revert back to 28 percent; the 28 percent bracket will increase to 31 percent; and the 33 percent bracket will increase to 36 percent. The special 10 percent bracket is eliminated." [Reuters]

The Attorney and the General

"Michael Hayden, the former CIA director, penned a superb op-ed in the Washington Post on Sunday. Succinctly, he tallies the wages of having Attorney General Eric Holder make national-security decisions. .... He shows that these decisions have been premised on left-wing political calculations that always shortchange intelligence collection and the pursuit of American interests. Holder’s judgments are not based on what America’s safety requires or on what the law maximally permits U.S. intelligence to do in wartime......

People can blame the attorney general, and there certainly is plenty for which he should answer. But Holder is a sideshow. These decisions are presidential decisions. The fact that Obama evidently delegates them to Holder does not change that. The policy of surrendering enemy combatants to the civilian-justice system and giving them all the rights of the American citizens whom they are trying to kill is an Obama policy being implemented by Holder; it’s not a Holder policy. Climategate scientist hid more information?

"Even before Climategate, a lot of people were skeptical about global warming. The most fanatical cultists like Al Gore and Laurie David insisted we conserve energy and drive fuel efficient cars, all while they fly around the country in private jets and live in mansions using more energy in a day than most of us do in a year. It was hard to take a movement seriously when the leaders of that movement didn’t even do what they said needed to be done in order to save the planet.....

Well, Climategate just took another interesting turn. It turns out that it doesn’t stop just at some hacked e-mails. Professor Phil Jones, the former director of Climatic Research Unit, allegedly went further than just trying to hide the truth in some e-mails — and the UN might be involved, too." [Hot Air]

Obama Surrenders to Mayor of Tampa

Governor Crist stands ready to suck up to him .........

The most important story you didn't see last week (and probably won't ever see)

"A Senate hearing last week confirmed the public's worst concern about Barack Obama: That when it comes to national security Obama hasn't just been asleep at the switch, he hasn't even bothered to find the switch. ....

The picture that emerged from the hearing was of a president disinterested in national security, more concerned about health scare and cap-and-tax than in preventing what his Homeland Security chief infamously called "man-caused disasters"; of an administration more busy fighting turf wars than waging the real war against Islamic terrorists--whom Obama refuses to even call by that name; of a Commander in Chief who doesn't take seriously his most essential job of protecting this country's citizens, more focused on extending terrorists these citizens' rights than he is on gathering the intelligence needed to keep Americans safe." [American Thinker]

Black History Month Should Be About Black History

"I've often said jokingly that Black History Month should more accurately be called "white people and America suck" month. Rather than focusing on all of black history, every February the liberal media and most democrats gleefully bring up all of America's past sins. Fine. I mean after all, it is a part of history. But what is so wrong is these race exploiters imply that current race relations in America have not come very far from the days of blacks being lynched. Thus, Black History Month in reality is the liberal democrat's annual fund raiser and promo campaign for more entitlement programs." [Lloyd Marcus]

What Obama Isn't Saying

"What every progressive wants is to put the particular issue he espouses beyond political dispute. Obama wanted, and as his first State of the Union address showed still wants, to put health care beyond politics so that he can be the last president to be concerned with it. .....

Obama is not our king. But he uses the monarchical branch of our republic without embarrassment to project the nonpartisan image of a monarch. He has not been a strong president; he has deferred to Congress, perhaps to his cost. But he likes the aura of monarchy and uses it skillfully to transcend partisan argument. He lets us know that he admires Abraham Lincoln, yet his speeches could not be more different from Lincoln’s in respect to argument. Lincoln used argument to transcend momentary feelings. Obama avoids it by recourse to vacuous words like “change” and “hope,” never saying toward what or for what." [Weekly Standard]

Geithner Singled Out In TARP Watchdog Neil Barofsky's Scathing Report On AIG Bailout

"A brutal report issued Monday by a government watchdog holds Timothy Geithner -- then the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and now the nation's Treasury Secretary -- responsible for overpayments that put billions of extra tax dollars in the coffers of major Wall Street firms, most notably Goldman Sachs."
