Skunked

Like Pepé Le Pew, the Congress lights off a stink bomb whenever it speaks finances ....

"I speak, of course, to the budget deficit and Washington’s inability to recognize the intractable: 75% of the budget is non-discretionary and entitlement based. Without attacking entitlements – Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security – we are smelling $1 trillion deficits as far as the nose can sniff. Once dominated by defense spending, these three categories now account for 44% of total Federal spending and are steadily rising.

Unless entitlements are substantially reformed, I am confident that this country will default on its debt; not in conventional ways, but by picking the pocket of savers via a combination of less observable, yet historically verifiable policies – inflation, currency devaluation and low to negative real interest rates.

Our clients, who represent unions, cities, U.S. and global pension funds, foundations, as well as Main Street citizens, do not want to be shortchanged or have their pockets picked. It is incumbent, therefore, in order to preserve the integrity of the U.S. Treasury market along with its favorable global interest rates, and to promote a stable U.S. economy, that entitlement spending be reduced, and that future liabilities be addressed in terms of healthcare and Social Security cost containment. You must attack entitlements and make ‘debt’ a four-letter word.”

The Liberal Addiction to Bureaucracy

"Ms. [Elizabeth] Warren's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created by the Dodd-Frank financial reform act, is a curious animal.  It is not part of a regular executive department, but part of the Federal Reserve System.  It is funded not from normal appropriations, but from the Fed's profits.  But it is not accountable to the Fed.  It is accountable instead to the Financial Stability Council, which can overrule the bureau's rules only with a two-thirds supermajority vote.  Right now according to the Wall Street Journal, Ms. Warren and her bureau are working on a bureaucratic plan to "punish banks and reward voters with mortgage principal writedowns," as if that will help turn around the continuing housing meltdown."

Caterpillar's Alarm Bell For Illinois

The CEO of Caterpillar (earth moving, tractors, BIG yellow trucks!) has told Illinois Governor Quinn that he is considering moving out of Illinois.  This after Illinois has raised state corporate income tax by 49%, from 7.3% to 10.9%.  Illinois now has the highest corporate income tax in the entire world!   And what is the Governor's response? ...... aw, don't worry, they wouldn't do that.

"Caterpillar, of course, is lucky. It can move. Unfortunately, small towns that rely on business with Caterpillar workers will go under. So will many small businesses that aren't able to move after such tax hikes.

If Quinn doesn't think Caterpillar has given him reason to panic, he'd better think again. By his indifference, he'll learn the bitter lesson of how fast a state can become just like Detroit."

Can We Save America?

"Sixty years ago in February I came to the United States.  I was classified as a "displaced person" from World War II with no identity or knowledge of when, where or to whom I was born, an orphan who had miraculously survived on the streets of a war ravaged city somewhere in central Europe.  On that bitterly cold overcast morning as I stood, alone at the railing of a ship, staring at the iconic image of the Statue of Liberty, I found myself arriving in a strange country itself coming face to face with a new and unwelcome role as the foremost nation on earth about to embark on being the most dominate economic and military power in modern history.

The current Ruling Class is predominantly made up of those active in various political movements in the 1960's through the early 1980's and is the most self-centered and egotistical generation in the history of the country.  Having been raised in unfathomable prosperity and told how unique they were, many sought out political and social philosophies which aided and abetted their determination to justify a hedonistic lifestyle, eliminate any ethical or behavioral absolutes and solidify their need for power and notoriety.

In order to awaken at least a part of the populace it has taken an imminent financial and societal disaster and the election of President Obama, who personifies the excesses of the past sixty years.  He is someone steeped in radical re-distributionist ideology; he is dishonest, as he is a believer in the end justifies any means; and he is dominated by an overweening narcissism.  Mr. Obama is the epitome of someone with a lack of character, as manifested in his indecisiveness and willingness to destroy America's future in order to permanently seize control over the citizenry.."

Obama’s Monetary Policy: Stick It to the Middle Class

"It seems that one heck of a prestigious dude — William Dudley, president of the New York Federal Reserve — decided to have a little tête-à-tête with local consumers, no doubt sensing a need to bolster their confidence in the Fed’s more-fishy-by-the-hour monetary policy. Mr. Dudley gave a nice PR speech highlighting “improvements” in the economy and the Fed’s “successes.”

Then came the questions. One guy had the audacity to hope he could make some sense out of the government’s insistence that inflation remains minimal despite the largest monthly increase in food costs in 36 years — and gas spiking so much that soon the cost of getting to work may exceed one’s wages. Dudley made use of a skill they must have taught him at Berkeley, proceeding to ram his Goldman Sachs resume, along with his Gucci loafer, right through his front teeth:

“Today you can buy an iPad 2 that costs the same as an iPad 1 that is twice as powerful,” he replied. “You have to look at the prices of all things.”

To which one truly great American responded: “I can’t eat an iPad.” He might as well have added, “I can’t drive an iPad to work either.” And at the rate grocery and gas prices are rising, by the end of this year, I couldn’t afford that iPad’s monthly service fee even if I had enough discretionary income to purchase the little piece of dazzling technology in the first place.

Led into war by a president who can't be trusted

"Americans will have a hard time supporting President Obama's war in Libya -- because the United States is already fighting two wars, because the president never publicly made the case for involvement, because Congress never authorized the war, and because there are no identifiable American interests.

But just as important, for those Americans paying close attention, is the growing realization that the president can't be trusted. His assurances that America's military role in Libya will be limited in scope and duration carry little weight after the lies and evasions of his top aides. Not even a week into our war on Libya, the White House has already peppered Americans with a handful of falsehoods, equivocations and misleading statements."

Obama's War on the Middle Class

"It should be obvious that Obama and the left wing of the Democratic Party are not struggling to defend the middle class. Most of the time they are struggling to disenfranchise it by ignoring the basic rights of human liberty and of property that are guaranteed under our Constitution.

As Obama understands all too well, one of the hallmarks of all socialist countries is the absence of an independent middle class. From the Bolshevik experiment in Russia to socialist Venezuela today, it is necessary for communist leaders to eliminate that class of citizens who are not dependent on government for their welfare.  "

Are We Getting Our Money's Worth in Higher Education?

"President Obama has stressed that a college education is critical to the future of America and our ability to compete in the world marketplace. To achieve that aim, our government is spending 60% more in 2011 than 2008 and providing 123% more in tax breaks for post secondary education (i.e., college). Libya: Obama's Got Some 'Splainin' to Do

"Can anyone please "splain" our Libya policy?  There have been so many positions taken by so many different folks in the administration from State to Defense to Executive over the past 2-3 weeks that I am a tad confused.  Even the latest version announced with classic stern face, upturned jaw and bellicose language was preposterous if you listened closely to the words.

First of all, what exactly is the Libyan "conflict"?  Unlike other protests in the Middle East which have based on an effort to achieve some type of democratic reform, and for the most part have been peaceful assemblies, Libya is best described as an all out civil war among tribes based in different regions.  It gets worse.  While it has been possible to identify most of the protest leaders and their goals in other countries so we can at least evaluate what might ensue if their demands were adopted, we have no real understanding of who the Libyan "opposition" is other than they are all against Khadafy; and little grasp of what a post Khadafy Libya would look like with these guys in control."

Who's in charge? NATO members squabble over who leads Libyan bombings...and they can't even agree whether to assassinate Gaddafi

How much more evidence of Obama's lack of leadership do YOU need to be convinced he is too lightweight for the job of President?

"A war of words has erupted between the U.S. and Britain after the U.K. government claimed Muammar Gaddafi is a legitimate target for assassination.
U.K. government officials said killing the Libyan leader would be legal if it prevented civilian deaths as laid out in a U.N. resolution.

But U.S. defence secretary Robert Gates hit back at the suggestion, saying it would be 'unwise' to target the Libyan leader and that the bombing campaign should stick to the 'U.N. mandate'.

The infighting comes as a heated meeting of NATO ambassadors yesterday failed to resolve whether the 28-nation alliance should run the operation to enforce a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone, diplomats said.

  • Tensions with Britain as Gates rebukes UK government over suggestion Gaddafi could be assassinated
  • No-fly zone called into question after first wave of strikes 'neutralises' Libyan military machine
  • Italy to 'take back control' of bases used by allies unless NATO leadership put in charge of the mission
  • NATO baulks at taking over operation with Turkey and European countries unwilling
  • Russians tell U.S. to stop bombing in order to protect civilians
In the U.S. Mr Obama has made it clear he wants no part of any leadership role in Libya.

The President has already been criticised for continuing with a tour of Latin America as the military operation over Libya began. And yesterday he insisted again that while Gaddafi must go, the U.S. is not prepared to remove him by force, but merely to enforce the no-fly zone.

Even that hesitant stance, which has already earned him the title of the Great Vacillator, left him criticised for not seeking proper approval from Congress before sending the American military in."

Senator Questions $2-Billion Loan to Brazil for Offshore Drilling as Domestic Production Languishes

"Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) is questioning how the United States has benefited from a $2-billion loan the Export Import Bank of the United States made to a Brazilian oil company for its offshore drilling operations.

Specifically, Vitter now wants to know:
-- The name of all U.S. companies that have increased exports based on this loan.
-- The specific product exports that have increased based on this loan.
-- The return on investment for this loan during the next 5 and 10-year windows.
-- The name of all U.S. and foreign investors, including institutional investors, that increased their shareholdings in Petrobras in excess of $50 million within a 6 month period before and after the ExIm loan.  [George Soros is a major investor in Petrobas]"

The Goil From Ipanema

" "Right now, the president could order that oil production start in Alaska; that all permits be granted in the Gulf of Mexico; that Canada - our trusted ally, number one trading partner and largest supplier of oil - gets the permits they need to spend billions of dollars to build a pipeline across our border; or direct his Interior Secretary to stop holding up oil shale leasing on western lands.
"Instead, he's handing out loans for, and talking up the virtues of, Brazilian oil discoveries. These are discoveries his own policies are stopping right here in the U.S. The mystery of his approach is why it continues to be so anti-North American when it comes to where we get our oil."

Union Thuggery: Why Isn't It News?

Obama, The Accidental President

"Once upon a time there lived an emperor. One day two crafty weavers turned up at the palace and offered to make a new suit of clothes for the ruler -- clothes so marvelous that they would be invisible to those unfit for their positions, stupid or incompetent. And so when the emperor stepped out to show off his brand-new attire, the courtiers, fearful of being found out and ridiculed, would not admit to themselves the truth of what their eyes were telling them. Until an innocent child in the crowd of onlookers cried out, "He isn't wearing anything at all!", and the spell was broken.

Hans Christian Andersen did not indicate whether the weavers' names were David Axelrod and David Plouffe, but the similarity is striking. The two Davids brilliantly succeeded in packaging and selling to the country an unknown tyro from Chicago without a past or any visible qualifications other than imposing looks, a resonant voice and an ability to use the teleprompter. Like the weavers in the great Danish writer's fairy-tale, the Obama handlers insulated their candidate against criticism by preemptively warning that any doubt as to his fitness for office was proof positive of mean-spiritedness and racism. And the liberal crowd swallowed the bait hook, line and sinker."

Libya and the Left's Sickening Hypocrisy on the Use of Military Force

"An evil Arab dictator has been in power for decades. He personally controls his country's vast oil wealth. A sponsor of terrorism, he has provoked the West to take military action against him in the past. Islamic fundamentalists despise him as much as the West does. When his people rise up against him, he murders them ruthlessly. The United Nations Security Council has passed resolutions condemning him. An American president, intent on promoting democracy in the Middle East, demands that the dictator abdicate. When the dictator fails to leave, the American president authorizes the use of military force. Our "allies," including Great Britain, are asked to help. The endgame for the use of force is unclear.

Sound familiar? No, we're not talking about Moammar Qaddafi and Barack Obama. We're talking about Saddam Hussein and George W. Bush. The difference is this: in almost the exact same set of circumstances, Bush was called "Hitler" by the Left. Leftists wrote plays and stories and movies about killing him. Democratic Party politicians, like Sen. Dick Durbin, likened our troops to "Nazis." Democratic Senators like John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, who voted for the military action, accused the president of lying. Mass demonstrations and protests, sponsored by the communist and socialist Left, broke out in the U.S. and Great Britain. Antiwar groups like Code Pink staged demonstrations at military recruiting stations, and had to be dragged shrieking from the halls of Congress. Opponents of the war shouted that Saddam's Iraq never attacked us, and that our military action was a violation of international law. The Left cried for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney."

US Cost of Living Hits Record, Passing Pre-Crisis High

"A special index created by the Labor Department to measure the actual cost of living for Americans hit a record high in February, according to data released Thursday, surpassing the old high in July 2008. The Chained Consumer Price Index, released along with the more widely-watched CPI, increased 0.5 percent to 127.4, from 126.8 in January. Obama Squeaks Up

"..... the dithering of the Obama administration has raised a more fundamental question: Have our elites—and not just those running the Obama administration—become so encumbered by self-doubt, so weakened by sophistication, so seduced by the excuses provided by the claim of helplessness, that they are incapable of acting decisively? Once Americans tried to seize every moment of opportunity. Now we are far more likely to stand back and watch history unfold, while explaining why we can’t do anything to shape that history. After all, our foreign policy establishment explains condescendingly, the challenges are daunting. So many forces are beyond our control. The risks are great. The obstacles are overwhelming.

There is another word for this widespread attitude of passive self-doubt. That word is decadence.

Last week’s farcical ferry, bobbing aimlessly in the waters off Tripoli, was an image for our government’s embrace of helplessness, for its acceptance of decline. It recalled the downed helicopters in Iran in early 1980, emblems of the failed Carter administration. But at least President Carter sent helicopters. In so doing he overruled his secretary of state, who wished to do nothing. So far, this president is performing in this crisis at a sub-Jimmy Carter level of assertiveness and command."

"Wisconsin has become the latest setting for organized liberal activism.  Pro-union forces are setting out to execute the power-plays of leftism: divide, intimidate, and conquer.  Community organizers are working tirelessly to increase the opposition through lies and distortion in the hope of building cold-blooded hatred for Walker and his allies.

Traditional Wisconsin symbols have been co-opted to foment anti-Walker sentiment.  UW Madison mascot Bucky Badger is portrayed as a victim of Walker's budget cuts, cheese is promoted as union-friendly, and some even claim that Walker has cut state funding for the Green Bay Packers.

Shockingly, the absurdity doesn't end there.  The Wisconsin Dog Rescue is joining others in vilifying Walker as a dog-hater, and liberal blogs steadfastly avow that "Governor Scott Walker wants to kill puppies."

Common citizens and private businesses are the next objects of union wrath.  Director of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association Jim Palmer signed a letter giving businesses who donated to Gov. Walker's campaign one week to publicly denounce Walker or face a union-organized boycott."

America Slouching Towards Fiscal Armageddon

"America is in grave danger.  Our government's out-of-control spending and our politicians' refusal to implement meaningful budget reforms are leading us towards a fiscal crisis that can undermine our very way of life.  We are spending ourselves into oblivion.  With each passing day, we are $5 billion in deficit spending closer to the edge of an abyss that can cripple our economy, destroy America's wealth, and lead to catastrophic social consequences for all current and future generations. Yet our leaders in Washington refuse to face reality and continue to play political games while the country's budget crisis deepens and the threat grows exponentially."

Government-Union Reform Spreads Beyond Wisconsin

"The fight in Wisconsin is about who controls government: the voters, through their elected representatives, or government unions? Collective bargaining means the government cannot employ workers except on terms the union accepts. Government unions also politicize the civil service — the money they collect through the state payroll system makes them major political players. Unsurprisingly, unions want government to serve their interests instead of the public’s.

Fortunately, other states are following Governor Walker’s lead. Many states across the country have passed or are moving to pass legislation restoring voter control over their government: ....."

Why The Japanese Aren't Looting

As one raised in Japan through my formative years, age eleven to eighteen, I understand and agree with this synopsis.  [clipper]

"Foreign observers are noting with curiosity and wonder that the Japanese people in disaster-plagued areas are not looting for desperately-needed supplies like bottled water. This behavior contrasts sharply with what has so often happened in the wake of catastrophes elsewhere, such as Haiti, New Orleans, Chile, and the UK, to name only a few.  Most people chalk up the extraordinary good behavior to Japanese culture, noting the legendary politeness of Japanese people in everyday life."

Barack Obama: A Management Appraisal

"In addition to examining the roots of Barack Obama's political philosophy, an evaluation of his management style, such as might be undertaken by an independent business consultant, is likewise instructive. ........

Lacking both the relevant education and experience, were he applying for an executive position in any company, he would in all likelihood be quickly rejected.  His refusal to divulge school records and grades would also work against him.  If the business to which he applied was involved in any form of sensitive or defense work, his past associations with radicals would result in the denial of any security clearance. ..........

From a business standpoint, his lack of performance and organizational skills would demand that any ethical consultant approach the Board of Directors with a very strong recommendation that Mr. Obama be fired.  Perhaps in 2012, he will be."

Call an Ambulance for Political Correctness

" In the old days, when an ambulance arrived at your door, the first thing the EMT would ask would be something like: “Where does it hurt?” or “What are the symptoms?”

In this document, the first question to the sick person is not: “Do you want to go to the hospital?” The first question is: “Are you Hispanic/Latino/Spanish?”

DEATH THREATS

[WTMJ - Newsradio]

Debarred short seller with checkered past lobbied Education Department on for-profit colleges

"Before a jury found Manuel Asensio had illegally defamed a company whose demise he would profit from, and before securities regulators barred him from employment in the banking industry for the rest of his life, he used to take down companies with savage reports under the banner of his investment bank, Asensio & Company.

Then, as an “activist” short seller, he would compile damning research on a business, take a market bet its stock would go down, publish his report, and profit when it did go down."

The revelations also come on the heels of charges by Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn that Education Department officials were “tipping hedge funds” with inside information, allowing them to take trading positions ahead of the market. Doing so, Coburn said at a Senate hearing last week, “is highly unethical and if proven to be the case, some people ought to be going to jail in the Department of Education." "
