The Palestinian Authority: What Obama Is Missing

A handful of recent events speak directly to the wisdom -- or lack thereof -- of such a proposal:...."

Obama's half-sister raises birth-certificate doubts

"A statement from Barack Obama's half-sister has at least cast a shadow of doubt on the legitimacy of the "Certificate of Live Birth" document that was released by the White House this week in an attempt to stifle questions about his eligibility, by referencing his apparent adoption by her father, Indonesian Lolo Soetoro."

Obama hits NYC while ignoring Texas’ plea for help

"Texas has been struck by wildfires, but Obama has denied their requests for federal aid. Could this be a case of Obama punishing his “enemies”?

“Yeah, and Rick Perry’s trying to ‑‑ been trying to get federal help in Texas for, what, two weeks now, 14 days?” Pat said.

“I believe this would fall right into the category of punishing your enemies, Mr. Obama.  Because I call you Mr. Obama here intentionally because you’re not acting like the president of the United States.  You are acting like a private individual that is campaigning and punishing his enemies,” Glenn said.

“You have one of the 50 states crying out for two weeks and saying we need emergency assistance.”

“You have the state that I believe provided 3/4 of the jobs for the recovery for the last two years and what are you doing?  Punishing them?  Or do you have a golf game or a fundraiser to get to before you get to the respond to Texas for help.  My gosh, Mr. Obama!  Read the Declaration of Independence.”

So where was Obama while ignoring Texas’s plea for help? He was in NYC attending various fundraising dinners and events across the city. Nice work."

"The media and the blogosphere are abuzz with dumbfounded reactions to the White House's snub of Christians during the weekend. No presidential proclamation celebrating Christianity's highest holy day of Easter was issued, compounded by the White House chief spokesman's scoffing response to reporters' questions about the omission.

A Republic If We Can Keep It

"..... the crucial question becomes whether people like Progressive government’s endeavors enough to pay for them

If we don’t, if it becomes democratically impossible either to raise the taxes necessary to fund the government’s operations, or to reduce the scope of its activities to a level that can be accommodated by the taxes the people are willing to pay, then the Progressive project collapses.

The people will no longer mediate the disparity between what they demand from government and what they surrender to it.  Instead, decisive power over governance will pass to the lenders who keep public-sector operations afloat.

Such a result would be a financial debacle."

Is China Preparing to Dump its $1 Trillion of Treasuries?

"China may be preparing to cut its foreign exchange reserves by about two-thirds, down to about $1 trillion from its current $3.04 trillion level, according to Chinese news service Xinhua.

Why? China simply has too much money, according to Zhou Xiaochuan, the head of the People’s Bank of China.  “Foreign-exchange reserves have exceeded the reasonable level that our country actually needs,” he recently said.

This would have severe consequences, mostly for the American people.

Because the U.S. has racked up so much debt among foreign creditors like China, we have become increasingly vulnerable to their whims.  China dumping a significant portion of its U.S. treasuries could spark a run on the dollar, uprooting it as the world’s reserve currency.  How?

It would cause a rush to the exits on the treasuries market, robbing the ability of the U.S. to borrow from other creditors, who would not want to risk having the value of their assets devalued.  Suddenly, a frenzy would occur by financial institutions to cash in dollars for something — anything — of value."

America’s Ever Expanding Welfare Empire

"A fundamental misconception about America’s welfare state misleads millions of voters to reflexively support ever bigger and more generous government. .....

..... the big picture comprises the entire scope of entitlement programs, including Social Security and Medicare. Social Security spending for 2010 was $721.5 billion, with Medicare spending totaling $457 billion for the year, for a combined total of $1.179 trillion. Adding in federal welfare spending for the year leaves a combined total for entitlement spending of $1.879 trillion. The total federal budget for that year was 3.720 trillion. So entitlement/welfare state spending overall for that year was just over 50% of the entire budget. Not exactly stingy.

The War on Poverty famously began in 1965. From 1965 to 2008, the total spent only on means tested welfare for the poor in 2008 dollars has been nearly $16 trillion, according to the Heritage Foundation. Rector reports that has been more than all spending on all military conflicts from the American Revolution to today, in 2008 dollars."

No Time for Civility

"The United States is being held captive by an ideologically driven president, not because he has the support of the people but because the opposition is too cowed and browbeaten to offer more than token resistance and threadbare platitudes.  The surrender on the government shutdown, the premature waving of the white flag over the issue of raising the debt ceiling, and the woeful lack of support of the Ryan budget plan by the leadership of the conservative movement and the Republican Party have emboldened Obama and the Democrats.  They are comfortable in the knowledge that their opposition will always play by the Marquis of Queensbury rules while they are willing to revert to a street brawl.

Despite the protestations of Obama and his sycophants in the media, the United States has stalled and tipped over into a long-term death spiral.

The Republicans in Congress, those running or contemplating a run for the presidency, the titular heads of the conservative movement, the conservative media, and the Tea Party movement must adopt a much more aggressive stance and demeanor toward the left and its allies, be it the media, unions, or their elected politicians.  Their playbook is 80 years old, dog-eared, and open for all to see.  The left and Obama will cower and retreat when confronted with a new and fearless conservative movement. "So successful have the Progressives been that hardly anyone in either party batted a law-abiding eye at the constitutionally shocking financial bailouts and rewriting of the bankruptcy law in just the past few years. The very idea of the rule of law disappears in the shadow of the living constitution. This is why supporters of the President’s health care plan have reacted with stunned incredulity when asked where in the Constitution is the authority to enact such a plan.  This is also why it is a substantial—though very incomplete—political victory just to raise that question.  The great debate is between defenders of the Constitution and advocates of the living constitution, which renders the Constitution meaningless.  The question of the size and role of government will be decided by the more fundamental debate."

"Tax reform is a key element of the Ryan proposal that has already come under attack from the left.  Democrats falsely believe that a return to Clinton era taxes, especially on "the rich," is a prerequisite for increasing revenue and bringing down the debt over the coming years.  While a "tax the rich more" approach is a useful demagogic tool, the relationship between tax rates and tax revenue is not as simple as it may seem.  Furthermore, corruption, inefficiencies, and inequities would likely increase under a strategy that simply raises taxes on the backbone of the existing system."

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on."

FCC Internet Regulation: Not So Fast

"In the House, HJ37, the resolution to disapprove the FCC action, has been approved on a floor vote of: 238 to 174. Last December, under cover of the holidays and the spectacle of the lame duck Congress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defied a federal court and enacted an internet regulatory takeover.....

The policy discussion belongs in its proper venue of Congress and under the sunlight of public view.  Here are just some of the questions open to public debate:
  • What are the limits of FCC statutory authority?
  • Which of the three logical choices does the public want?
    1. A private monopoly internet that is government-regulated?
    2. A competitive free market of multiple vendors policed for criminal activity following the rule of law?
    3. A monopoly, government-operated internet?
  • Does the present wide-scale use of delegated authority exceed the ability of Congress to provide proper oversight?  The resolution, HJ37, will be a key test of that ability."

Chicago school bans some lunches brought from home

Here is a clear example of SOCIALISM AT WORK.   Some bureaucrats concluded that they should provide healthy meals to students while forbidding all parents from providing their own choices. This is an example of the "central planning" mindset .... we (all knowing and with superior education) bureaucrats know better than you, a mere parent.  We can care for your children better than you.  [clipper]

"Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.
"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke." "

Progressives ponder why tea party is kicking their butts

"By the time I finished reading this lengthy, plaintive missive by Richard Esko at the Huffington Post, I will confess that I’d actually begun feeling sorry for him. Observing the conclusion of the recent budget battles and viewing them as a disastrous loss for the progressive movement, Mr. Esko casts about for an answer to what seems to be the question of the day: How does the evil Tea Party keep kicking our butts when our ideas are so wildly popular and clearly superior? And he thinks he’s found some answers."

Lessons From Nuremberg

"GEORGE ORWELL is usually a footsure guide across political battlegrounds. In late 1943, when the tide had turned in the Allies’ favor, he wrote about postwar trials. Oddly, he advocated Hitler and Mussolini slipping away. His verdict for them would not be death unless the Germans and Italians themselves carried out summary executions (as they eventually did in Mussolini’s case).

For once Orwell missed his step. The Allies did stage a trial of the Nazi war criminals, at Nuremberg. .... The trial had flaws. To some it will always seem to be “victors’ justice” and it can be called hypocritical in that the Soviet Union, guilty of many of its own crimes against humanity, was an equal partner with the democratic prosecutors and judges. But, over all, it succeeded very well."

Redistributing from the 'Have Nots' to the 'Haves'

"Just who are these "haves"?  They are the 22.5 million public sector employees of city, county, state and federal government.  These are individuals who have close to life-time employment, pay that is often twice the level of an equivalent private sector employee, generous sick leave, annual leave, annual cost of living increases (even during recessions), great pension benefits, and health care benefits that private sector employees can only dream about.

The "have nots" are the private sector employees who pay the taxes that subsidize the public sector employees.  Private sector employees lack job security, wages that can be half that of equivalent public sector jobs, limited or no sick leave, limited annual leave, limited cost of living increases, limited pension benefits, and partially paid health care benefits."

Obama Reached Breaking Point in Budget Talks After Tense Hour With Boehner

"President Barack Obama had finally reached his breaking point.

For more than an hour in an Oval Office meeting on April 7, House Speaker John Boehner had insisted that any compromise on the government’s budget include a prohibition on federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Obama already had reluctantly agreed to a provision banning the District of Columbia from spending funds on abortion services -- and that was as far as he would go.

“Nope, zero,” he told Boehner, according to a senior Democratic aide. “John, this is it.” The room went silent."

Ryan’s Leap

"In 1983, the British Labour Party under the hard-left Michael Foot issued a 700-page manifesto so radical that one colleague called it “the longest suicide note in history.” House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan has just released a recklessly bold, 73-page, ten-year budget plan. At 37 footnotes, it might be the most annotated suicide note in history.

That depends on whether (a) President Obama counters with a deficit-reduction plan of equal seriousness, rather than just demagoguing the Ryan plan till next Election Day, (b) there are any Republicans beyond the measured, super-wonky Ryan who can explain and defend a plan of such daunting scope and complexity, and (c) Americans are serious people."

Warmists and the Organic Farming Activists

"Urban organic activists begin every argument by pining for the good ol' days.  They point out that in 1940 one calorie of fossil-fuel energy produced two calories of food.  But now, due to the dreaded effects of industrialization, 20 calories of fossil-fuel energy are required per calorie of food.  And this, for them, illustrates why an immediate transformation of the food biz is required to "save the planet."  How?  By converting from a fossil-fuel-based food economy to one based instead on sunshine.  Case closed!  After all, it's a 20-fold increase, right? .....

If only they had ever worked a day on a farm, these "slow," urban activists would appreciate the massive amounts of human and animal labor that used to be required before machines driven by fossil fuels came along.  The reason only a single calorie of fossil-fuel energy was required to produce two calories of food was that, prior to the mass industrialization during the Second World War, farmers did the rest of the work by hand and by back!  Far more calories were consumed emitting far more CO2.  Otherwise, industrialization would not have made economic sense."

Where’s the Senate’s budget?

"As the press hyperventilates over the threat of a government shutdown and pushes the last-minute-hero meme coming from the White House, here’s something to keep in mind that I haven’t seen discussed much in the last few weeks.  Where, exactly, is the Senate budget?

The House passed a full-year budget weeks ago, HR1, which was rejected by the Senate on the same day that a Democratic-leadership-approved budget also failed — by a wider margin than the GOP plan.

Normally, when a House plan fails in the Senate, the Senate passes its own budget plan in response.  The two chambers then form a conference committee to reach a compromise that produces a budget.  However, this process requires that the Senate actually approve a budget on its own.   Since voting down HR1 and the Democratic plan, the Senate hasn’t done anything — which means it has gone more than 18 months without approving a budget of some kind."

Nancy Pelosi’s absurd math on senior citizens losing their meals

“In one of the bills before us, 6 million seniors are deprived of meals — homebound seniors are deprived of meals. People ask us to find our common ground, the middle ground. Is middle ground 3 million seniors not receiving meals?"  [Pelosi]

"The first problem with Pelosi’s statistic is that, according to the agency’s budget documents, only about 2.6 million seniors receive such meals. That’s even less than what she decried as the mushy middle ground of compromise.
After we pointed out that fact, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said “she means meals for seniors — 6 million meals.” In 2011, the agency is expected to deliver a little over 200 million meals, so that’s a cut of about three percent."     ................. and it gets worse from here .....

A Question

"JoAnne Kloppenburg holds a tiny lead over Justice David Prosser in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. I assume she will win, and if the final result is within a few hundred votes, I assume it will have been procured by fraud, of which there is some evidence I also believe that since Kloppenburg is evidently a liberal activist, she will contribute to any number of bad decisions.....

So Kloppenburg's election is unfortunate, but I don't see any reason to think it will have any effect on the Republicans' labor legislation. It is also of doubtful symbolic value. I had expected her to win in a landslide, given the enormous resources that the Left poured into what would normally be a low-turnout election, and given the hysteria and strong financial interest that motivate union voters. Under the circumstances, the fact that the Left could do no better than a tie bodes reasonably well for the upcoming recall actions, where the real action will be."

Inflation inflicting pain, as wages fail to keep pace with price hikes

"Inflation is back, with higher prices for food and fuel hammering American consumers, and this time it really hurts.

It’s not just that prices are rising — it’s that wages aren’t.

Previous bouts of inflation have usually meant a wage-price spiral, as pay and prices chase each other ever upward. But now paychecks are falling further and further behind. Political Statistics

"When someone gives you a check and the bank informs you that there are insufficient funds, who do you get mad at? In your own life, you get mad at the guy who gave you a check that bounced, not at the bank. But, in politics, you get mad at whoever tells you that there is no money.

We've Become a Nation of Takers, Not Makers

"If you want to understand better why so many states—from New York to Wisconsin to California—are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.

It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees. Is it any wonder that so many states and cities cannot pay their bills?"

To borrow an analogy from biology, if the parasites overwhelm the host, it is catastrophic for both the host and the parasites. (Which is why viruses aren't really trying to kill you, at least not quickly.) That analogy may be unfair; certainly not all government workers are parasites. Let's try this one: if the cowboy gets bigger than the horse, both the horse and the cowboy are in trouble.

Presidential limousine, security vehicles exempt from fed 'green' vehicle policy

MY reason for having an exemption is MORE IMPORTANT than YOURS !!!!!

The arrogance of this hypocritical, elitist, imperialist is overwhelming.  What is good for you is not good enough for me !!!!

"I'm directing our departments and our agencies to make sure 100 percent of the vehicles they buy are fuel-efficient or clean energy cars and trucks by 2015.Not 50 percent, not 75 percent — 100 percent of our vehicles," Obama said today.

Secret Service spokesman Robert Novy said the directive wouldn't apply to vehicles used for some law enforcement or security reasons by various federal agencies.

This isn't the first time law enforcement has been exempted from a vehicle policy by the Obama administration.

Obama signed an October 2009 executive order banning texting behind the wheel by all federal employees. But he said agency heads may exempt "certain employees, devices, or vehicles in their respective agencies that are engaged in or used for protective, law enforcement, or national security responsibilities or on the basis of other emergency conditions."
