The Spirit of Checks and Balances

" Senator Harry Reid of Nevada recently stated that the National Labor Relations Board, the regulatory agency established by the 1935 National Labor Relations Act, was “created in the same spirit of checks and balances” as the U.S. Constitution itself. NLRB “acts as a check on employers and employees alike,” said Reid.

Reid was defending NLRB’s decision to issue a complaint against Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, for opening a new production facility in South Carolina to produce its latest commercial aircraft, the 787 “Dreamliner.”  "

Are You Better Off Now Than You Were Two Years Ago?

“Are you better off than you were four years ago?” -  Ronald Reagan before 1980 election

"And though we’re just over halfway through President Obama’s first term in office, it seems all Americans should ask themselves if we’re better off now than we were two years ago.

The answer [now] is just as straightforward: No, we’re not. Unemployment is at 9% and our national debt is over $14,000,000,000,000. According to Reuters, our floundering economy is only poised to get worse. Obama’s answer to the unemployment and incomprehensible debt is to raise taxes to the tune of $2 trillion: that’s “$1 trillion in new taxes on wealthier Americans (and small businesses)” and another trillion sought “in higher tax revenues by reducing tax breaks and subsidies.”  "

Another Step in the Infantilization of Humanity

"This is one of the dumbest, and yet most ominous, of recent headlines: Italian Seismologists Charged With Manslaughter for Not Predicting 2009 Quake.

The linked Fox story quotes a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey who says that Italy's criminal prosecution "has a medieval flavor to it." Actually, you would have to go back to a more primitive era to recapture the condition of childish dependence that this story reveals. Many Europeans, and a growing number of Americans, have abandoned any pretense of looking after themselves and believe that it is the duty of the authorities--whoever they may be in a particular instance--to protect them from all harm, if not all inconvenience."

DNC chair: Republicans think illegal immigration should be illegal, or something

"This is what happens when political correctness distorts clear and descriptive language. Immigration reform activists have insisted on removing the phrase illegal immigration from the political lexicon, despite the fact that the term is both accurate and objective. Once that happens, it’s easy for the weak-minded to forget that we have a fairly generous legal immigration system that illegal immigrants bypassed and violated on their entry into this country. And by “the weak-minded,” I mean Debbie Wasserman-Schultz"

"Sarah Palin asked about Obama’s strange foreign policy of borrowing money from the Chinese to pay to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Given that we are running massive deficits and are drowning in more than $14 trillion in debt, and despite not knowing who will rule Egypt until its election this fall, this strange strategy may be the end result given President Obama’s announcement that he is committing $2 billion to Egypt’s “new government.” It’s part of a $20 billion foreign aid package laid out with the Group of 8 countries in Europe today."

What Obama Did to Israel

"Every Arab-Israeli negotiation contains a fundamental asymmetry: Israel gives up land, which is tangible; the Arabs make promises, which are ephemeral. The longstanding American solution has been to nonetheless urge Israel to take risks for peace while America balances things by giving assurances of U.S. support for Israel’s security and diplomatic needs.

For two and a half years, the Obama administration has refused to recognize and reaffirm these assurances. Then last week in his State Department speech, President Obama definitively trashed them. He declared that the Arab-Israeli conflict should indeed be resolved along “the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.”

The only remaining question is whether this perverse and ultimately self-defeating policy is born of genuine antipathy toward Israel or of the arrogance of a blundering amateur who refuses to see that he is undermining not just peace but the very possibility of negotiations."
[Krauthammer]

Clipper doesn't think he's a blundering amateur.  Obama's anti-Israeli position is well thought out, intentional and professional.  It is aimed at the destruction of Israel to benefit the rise of Muslim strength.

Ryan talks debt reduction, mediscare

SEE THE VIDEO HERE

"While Democrats were dancing in the streets over NY-26 and late night hosts were having a field day with the advertisement showing a Paul Ryan lookalike shoving a wheelchair bound grandmother off a cliff, Ryan continued to calmly – and even with some humor – answer the inaccurate charges and explain precisely what it is that he’s trying to do with his budget proposal.
Obamacare kills Medicare. Obamacare raids $500B from Medicare to spend on Obamacare, puts in place a 15 member board to ration Medicare – of bureaucrats. Our budget repeals the raiding, gets rid of the rationing board, preserves this program, makes no changes to the program for a person 55 years of age or older, and saves Medicare by reforming it for our generation, but it’s solvent.
The president’s plan does not save Medicare. It allows it to go bankrupt. It rations the program and raids the program. We will stop the raiding, and we save the program from bankruptcy."

WH really excited about new CAFE standards costing jobs

"In a move sure to please his environmentalist base as we gear up for the 2012 election, the Obama administration’s Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are quietly moving to make another round of changes to CAFE standards.

Unfortunately for Secretary LaHood, the Law of Unintended Consequences is still in play and ready to jump up and bite him where the sun don’t shine. In order to meet higher standards – particularly if those standards represent a significant jump from current technological capabilities – manufacturers are going to have to produce more “unconventional” (i.e., “green”) vehicles to bump up their average fuel efficiency across their fleet. Unconventional, green vehicles cost consumers more. And, according to the Energy Information Agency, more expensive cars during an economic downturn equal lower sales, which equals… (wait for it…) fewer jobs!"

A Generational Divide?

"For conservatives, it is crucial that the truth about the nation's entitlement obligations be communicated to the public ahead of the 2012 election.  Boomers need to know that they are not responsible for the impending shortfall, and younger voters need to understand that the burden falling on them is not the fault of their elders.  It is the fault of a government that raids the nation's retirement fund to pay for ever greater spending on unconstitutional programs.

During the era of the greatest bull market for both stocks and bonds in American history, the [Social Security Trust]  Fund's real return has ranged between 1.6% and 0%.

Compared with returns in the private market, those returns are dreadful.  Not to single out one fund, but the Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund, a popular option among retirees, has returned 10.23% since 1970.  Had investors entrusted only $100,000 to the Wellesley Fund in 1970, in place of the estimated $250,000 in 2011 dollars that each boomer will have contributed over a lifetime to the Trust Fund, that investment would now total nearly $5,000,000.  Instead of merely getting back what they paid in, or less, boomer retirees would have been driving Bentleys and flying off for spa vacations in Anguilla. The fake Chrysler loan payoff

"American taxpayers have already spent more than $13 billion bailing out Chrysler. The Obama administration already forgave more than $4 billion of that debt when the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Taxpayers are never getting that money back. But how is Chrysler now paying off the rest of the $7.6 billion they owe the Treasury Department?
The Obama administration’s bailout agreement with Fiat gave the Italian car company a “Incremental Call Option” that allows it to buy up to 16% of Chrysler stock at a reduced price. But in order to exercise the option, Fiat had to first pay back at least $3.5 billion of its loan to the Treasury Department. But Fiat was having trouble getting private banks to lend it the money. Enter Obama Energy Secretary Steven Chu who has signaled that he will approve a fuel-efficient vehicle loan to Chrysler for … wait for it … $3.5 billion."

Minnesota Governor Dayton (Democrat) Vetoes Voter ID Law

Fraud was obvious in 2008. As a result, the newly elected Republican legislature passes law requiring ID, supported by 80% of population . Democrat Governor vetoes it.

"In 2008, Minnesota Republicans were traumatized by the Coleman-Franken race, which Al Franken eventually won by a few hundred votes. National attention focused on the recount, which was scrupulously fair. The problem was that, as with any recount, all you can do is count for a second time the votes that were cast illegally on election day. I have no doubt that more legal voters voted for Norm Coleman than Al Franken, but once the ballots are in the box, there is nothing that can be done. Hence the urgency of the voter ID law.

Until now, Minnesota has had lax laws that facilitate voter fraud. Not only does the state have same-day registration, there is also an absurd system whereby a resident of a precinct can "vouch" for as many as 15 people who are not registered in the precinct and have no identification that would otherwise allow them to register. This means that the Democrats can station an operative at a polling place, bus in students from Wisconsin, illegal immigrants, etc., and allow them to vote illegally by having their operative vouch for the whole busload."

‘Shut Up!’: Fmr. Clinton Adviser Walks Off Fox News Set During Fiery Interview

"During a fiery and contentious interview this afternoon on Fox News, former Bill Clinton campaign adviser Simon Rosenberg had enough of conservative talk-show host Ben Ferguson interrupting and talking over him. The disgust was plastered on Rosenberg’s face. But disgust soon crept from his face to his arms and then his legs, as Rosenberg got up and left during the interview after telling Ferguson to “shut up!”

The two were discussing Clinton’s backstage comments to Paul Ryan about compromising on Medicare. But don’t let the “compromise” subject matter fool you — the two pundits were sure to give an interview that was full of wild disagreement. The main point of contention seemed to be Rosenberg’s claim that Democrats were not fear-mongering. Ferguson found the preposterous, especially considering the recent Democratic ad that portrayed Paul Ryan dumping an old woman off a cliff."

Inasmuch as no serious Republican candidate for president is currently divorced, the facts can be considered without violating the 11th Commandment to never speak ill of a fellow Republican.

The Commerce Clause

"Are there any limits, in principle, remaining on federal power in America?  We have seen in these letters that there are elected and appointed officials and citizens in the country who would answer, for all practical purposes: “No.” We have also seen that the question is not closed and that it is not just for lawyers or judges to decide; it belongs to all the people, and to all three branches of government.  Let us reflect on one path our nation took that, over the course of a couple of generations, made assertions of unlimited federal power commonplace in America; and let us consider some recent decisions by the courts that remind us that the constitutional conversation is not over. The Mystery of Barack Obama Continues

"Of all these marvels, the latest mystery and probably most perplexing is that of Obama’s social security number. It appears that Obama has multiple identities in term of possessing numerous social security numbers. Orly Taitz, an attorney who has filed numerous suits against Obama regarding his eligibility to serve as president, appears to be the first to discover this. In her suit, representing a number of military officers who are refusing to serve under an ineligible commander in chief, she hired private investigator Neil Sankey to conduct research on Obama’s prior addresses and Social Society numbers. Using Intelius, Lexis Nexis, Choice Point and other public records, Sankey found around 25 Social Security numbers connected with Obama’s name."

Surely Mr. Bailey's "tell-all" has hotter stuff than that.

All of which is a reminder that Palin has largely dropped out of presidential speculation lately. At some point, pundits seemed to reach a consensus that she is staying out of the race, and most analyses now count her out. But she remains a powerful force in the conservative movement and the Republican Party."

Obama’s economic advisers not bullish on America these days

"Earlier this year, Barack Obama formed a new presidential advisory committee on jobs and competitiveness that the White House hoped would alleviate at least two critical problems for the administration.

First, after spending a year shoving ObamaCare down the throats of voters who clearly didn’t want it, Obama needed to re-establish that jobs had become a priority again.

Second, and only slightly less important, Obama had to bolster the private-sector bona fides for his administration, which almost entirely lacked any such experience.

Obama invited the heads of several American companies to join his panel, and they’re probably delighted with the access.  But as Bloomberg discovered, it may not be making them any more confident of Obama’s economic policies:....."

Liberal Cartoonist Can't Get Anyone To Publish His Anti-Obama Pieces

"Ted Rall's cartoons and opinion pieces were all the rage when he was attacking George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and American soldiers.

But now that there's a man in the White House the press absolutely adore, the once syndicated polemicist claims he's having a hard time getting anyone to publish his work:

A sample of recent rejections, each from editors at different left-of-center media outlets:
· "I am familiar with and enjoy your cartoons. However the readers of our site would not be comfortable with your (admittedly on point) criticism of Obama."
· "Don't be such a hater on O and we could use your stuff. Can't you focus more on the GOP?"
· "Our first African-American president deserves a chance to clean up Bush's mess without being attacked by us."

Obama is the one they ought to be blackballing. He has been a terrible disappointment to the American left. He has forsaken liberals at every turn. Yet they continue to stand by him. Which means that, in effect, they are not liberals at all. They are militant Democrats. They are Obamabots."

"A provision in the energy law signed by President Bush in 2007 mandates all light bulbs to be 70 percent more efficient in their use of electricity by the year 2020 (a bill mandating that government be 70 percent more efficient in their use of taxpayer dollars is nowhere in sight).
In December 2007, many of these state efforts became moot when the federal government enacted the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which requires all general-purpose light bulbs that produce 310–2600 lumens of light[8] be 30% more energy efficient (similar to current halogen lamps) than current incandescent bulbs by 2012 to 2014. The efficiency standards will start with 100-watt bulbs in January 2012 and end with 40-watt bulbs in January 2014.  [wikipedia]
But don’t worry, if you like lots of light, the 100-watt eco-friendly bulbs will be affordable — provided you’re rich:"

Indoor floodlight 65W LED replacements were on sale today at my local Home Depot for $54.97 each!!   My home uses 16 of these floodlights in recessed ceiling cans.  I am saved the pain however, because these LEDs cannot be used on dimmer circuits .... all of mine are on dimmers.  So, for the price of one LED floodlight, I bought three cases of regular old incandescent bulbs. On Catholic Campuses, Preferential Option for Democrats

"On the occasion of Speaker John Boehner’s recent commencement address at the Catholic University of America, 78 faculty members from Catholic colleges and universities signed an open letter criticizing him. Claiming that his voting record is at variance from the Church’s “most ancient moral teachings to preference the needs of the poor,” the letter alleges that Boehner’s support for legislation to address the needs of the poor is “among the worst in Congress.”

Advising him that it is his “moral duty as a legislator” to put the needs of the poor foremost in his considerations, the signatories enclosed a copy of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church — the catechism for Catholic obligations in public life.
It is ironic that this particular group of Catholic faculty members would choose to draw from the Compendium to educate the speaker on what the Church really teaches. The Compendium cautions that the first right — ahead of all other rights — is the right to life. Pronouncing abortion a “horrendous crime,” the Compendium warns about the illicitness of supporting abortion. Yet several of those signing the letter have publicly campaigned for pro-choice Catholic politicians — all Democrats — who not only promised to support a woman’s right to choose, but have consistently voted to expand abortion rights."

Shared Scarcity versus Renewed Prosperity

"Rep. Paul Ryan, Chairman of the House Budget Committee delivered a speech to the Economic Club of Chicago highlighting the very real {and serious} fiscal issues facing America today. In a most compelling way Ryan drew the contrast between the progressives {democratic party} vision of shared scarcity and the vision of renewed prosperity shared by the more fiscally responsible conservatives.

Rep. Ryan's speech for the most part will be overlooked by the liberal government/media complex. His speech will be greatly maligned by the progressive/collectivist sites that populate the blogoshere. "

The 'Education' Mantra

"One of the sad and dangerous signs of our times is how many people are enthralled by words, without bothering to look at the realities behind those words.

One of those words that many people seldom look behind is "education." But education can cover anything from courses on nuclear physics to courses on baton twirling.

Unfortunately, an increasing proportion of American education, whether in the schools or in the colleges and universities, is closer to the baton twirling end of the spectrum than toward the nuclear physics end. Even reputable colleges are increasingly teaching things that students should have learned in high school."

The Article Liberals Are Too Stupid to Write (and Republicans too reluctant to read)

"Why, after all this, does President Obama enjoy an approval rating near 50%?  How can people even think of voting for him over the Republican nominee in 2012?  Well wonder no more.

............................. lots of data ..............................
That's it.  This entire debate is about a difference that is less than 4% of GDP.  According to IMF figures, government in the US is spending 41% of GDP in 2011.  The current debate is about whether government spends 40% or 44% of GDP.  That is, whether we should be more like Luxembourg (39%), Canada (42%) or Norway (44%)."

Gingrich Goes Off The Tracks

"This morning Republicans are just beginning to assess the damage that former House Speaker and current presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has done to the GOP budget plan currently before Congress.  On "Meet the Press" Sunday, Gingrich denounced House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan's plan to restructure Medicare, saying, "I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering.  I don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate." Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) and Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.) are leading the bi-partisan effort, which includes 13 Republicans and 31 Democrats."

Obama Willing to Sacrifice Economy for Politics

" This summer, the huge Boeing assembly plant here will begin producing 787 Dreamliners — up to three a month, priced at $185 million apiece. It will, unless the National Labor Relations Board, controlled by Democrats and encouraged by Barack Obama's reverberating silence, gets its way.

Last month — 17 months after Boeing announced plans to build here, and with the $2 billion plant nearing completion — the NLRB, collaborating with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, charged that Boeing's decision violated the rights of its unionized workers in Washington state, where some Dreamliners are assembled and still will be even after the plant here is operational."

Ignore Geithner’s debt ceiling scare tactics

"Over the past 12 months through April, net interest expense of the federal government was $213.1 billion. Will there be no money to make these payments if the debt ceiling isn’t raised? There will be plenty. Over the past 12 months through April, the Treasury collected $2.27 trillion in revenues. In April alone, when individual tax returns are due, revenues totaled $289.5 billion, a bigger than expected gain, confirming that the economy recovered smartly over the past year.

It would be criminally insane for the Treasury to stop making interest payments on our debt just because Congress failed to agree on raising the ceiling when the revenues are certainly available to make the payments and auctions will continue to rollover maturing debt. It is insane for administration officials to suggest otherwise."

2012 Presidential White Paper - #1 Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

"Among all likely candidates for President in 2012, none has a record in public office or in commentary on public affairs as long or as thorough as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.  He has been voting or commenting on every important issue facing American politics, almost without interruption, for more than 30 years.  An exhaustive analysis of every nuance of each proposal is neither possible here, nor terribly useful for our purposes.  This report will focus on the highlights of his 19-year congressional voting record, as well as the economic policy positions he has most consistently championed in his post-congressional writings up to the present day.

Gingrich is best known for leading the 1994 “Republican Revolution” that swept the GOP into the House majority for the first time in over forty years, and he deserves immense credit for that.  His actual voting record in the House, however, was somewhat less stellar."

Taj Mahal Schools

"There's an old joke about a policeman around midnight spotting a drunk crawling around a lamp post. When asked what he was doing, the drunk replied "looking for my lost car keys." "Where did you lose them," asked the police officer? "Over there," said the drunk pointing off into the dark." "Then why look here," asked the cop? "Because there's more light here," answered the intoxicated gentleman.

Alas, like the drunk looking around the lamp post, would-be educational reformers have transformed "improving education" to the much easier "just spend more money," and if that fails, just spend even more. The results will be identical -- no car keys and no academic improvement."

Union Thugs Provide Card-Check Preview

"Card-check legislation is the unions' top priority and is strongly favored by Barack Obama and most Democrats. Why? Because under card check, there is no secret ballot. The unions know who is supporting them and who isn't. How will they treat the ones who don't sign the union card? The same way they treated the communications union workers who didn't appreciate having their money stolen by the bosses. If you think union violence is an old-fashioned concept, just let the Democrats adopt card check."

Former “alarmist” scientist says Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) based in false science

"David Evans is a scientist. He has also worked in the heart of the AGW machine.  He consulted full-time for the Australian Greenhouse Office (now the Department of Climate Change) from 1999 to 2005, and part-time 2008 to 2010, modeling Australia’s carbon in plants, debris, mulch, soils, and forestry and agricultural products. He has six university degrees, including a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. The other day he said:
The debate about global warming has reached ridiculous proportions and is full of micro-thin half-truths and misunderstandings. I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence, was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic.
And with that he begins a demolition of the theories, premises and methods by which the AGW scare has been foisted on the public."

Obama's stance will hurt Boeing

"This summer, the huge Boeing assembly plant here will begin producing 787 Dreamliners – up to three a month, priced at $185 million apiece.

It will, unless the National Labor Relations Board, controlled by Democrats and encouraged by Barack Obama’s reverberating silence, gets its way.

Last month – 17 months after Boeing announced plans to build here, and with the $2 billion plant nearing completion – the NLRB, collaborating with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, charged that Boeing’s decision violated the rights of its unionized workers in Washington state, where some Dreamliners are assembled and still will be even after the plant here is operational.

The NLRB has read a 76-year-old statute (the 1935 Wagner Act) perversely, disregarded almost half a century of NLRB and Supreme Court rulings, and patently misrepresented statements by Boeing officials."

Medicare Trustees Cast Doubt on ObamaCare Health Savin

Read the report ..... at least read the "Overview" - page 10 of the report....... [clipper]

"The 2011 annual report from the Medicare Board of Trustees casts doubt on the ability of the ObamaCare health reform law to achieve significant health care costs reductions, stating it is “very uncertain” whether the sweeping reform will succeed in reducing health care costs.

ObamaCare purports to reduce health care costs in two main ways: by forcing providers to implement efficiencies in the short term through gradual and predictable reductions in Medicare payments and by instituting broader health care delivery reforms over the long term. The Medicare Trustees report casts doubt on both approaches."

Obama Announces New Oil Drilling for EPA to Block

"One of President Obama’s 2012 slogans should be “Drill, maybe, drill.” Obama knows that merely a call for drilling isn’t actually drilling, so publicly he can sound as drill-happy as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood (as he did early last year and is starting to again). As long as the EPA is there to block or revoke permits, Obama can, with a wink and a nudge, keep the “green” in his corner:"

Helping to End Eminent Domain Abuse

"The United States House is currently considering the "Private Property Rights Protection Act."  This bill would be an important step in ensuring that all Americans, not just those in some states, have protection from eminent domain abuse.

In 2005, the House overwhelmingly passed this legislation in a bipartisan manner 376-38.  Unfortunately, it died in the Senate.  Congress once again has a chance to make it clear that no matter what state you live in or how much money your property generates, you will be protected from eminent domain abuse."

The speech in which he accused the Republicans of abandoning families of autistic and Down syndrome kids? In this same spirit of comity and mutual respect, Obama’s most recent invitation to civil discourse — on immigration — came just 11 minutes after he accused opponents of moving the goal posts on border enforcement. “Maybe they’ll need a moat,” he said sarcastically. “Maybe they want alligators in the moat.”"

Consumer Reports Knocks the Volt

"Let’s see… taxpayer money is being dumped into a car that the public can’t afford and/or doesn’t want. Demand for the expensive product is to be created by high gas prices combined with goading the public into buying one by scaring them with a mythical crisis pushed by an enviro-hypocrite who goes around in a private jet telling everybody the oceans are going to rise and flood the same coastlines where he recently invested millions in a seaside mansion. In a nutshell, the theme park impresarios who proposed “Six Flags Over Chernobyl” had a more solid business plan."

Expansive Executive Power Means Never Having To Say You're Sorry

"Imagine, for a moment, that these were George W. Bush’s policies at work. A quest for regime change in Libya, conducted without even a pro forma request for Congressional approval. A campaign of remote-controlled airstrikes, in which collateral damage is inevitable, carried out inside a country where we are not officially at war. A policy of targeted assassination against an American citizen who has been neither charged nor convicted in any U.S. court.
Imagine the outrage, the protests, the furious op-eds about right-wing tyranny and neoconservative overreach. Imagine all that, and then look at the reality. Show me the Money: John Boehner, "cut trillions," "Debt-ceiling hike without deep cuts would be ‘arrogant’"

"Speaker John Boehner will call on Congress to offset a debt ceiling hike with spending cuts of a greater amount, an ambitious proposal that puts House Republicans on a collision course with Democrats who want much more modest spending restrictions attached to the vote.

I will be the first to commend Boehner if he steps up to the plate and fulfills the mandate of the tea party that put him where he is and gets serious reform put in place in exchange for a debt ceiling hike.

Unfortunately, given his performance during the "budget battle" recently wherein he folded like a cheap 20-dollar suit, despite one of the most historic mandates in history, I am more than skeptical and highly doubt that he is up to the task.

If he doesn't perform during the debt ceiling showdown, the GOP is toast and will be thrown into the dustbin of history, as it should be.

And a viable fiscally conservative third party will emerge that tea-partiers, libertarians, independents and true conservatives can support."

Thoughts on a Surreal Depression

"History’s revolutions and upheavals — whether the Nika rioting in Constantinople, the periodic uprising of the turba in Rome, the French upheavals, or the Bolshevik Revolution — are rarely fueled by the starving and despised, but by the subsidized and frustrated, who either see their umbilical cord threatened, or their comfort and subsidies static rather than expansive — or their own condition surpassed by that of an envied kulak class. Perceived relative inequality rather than absolute poverty is the engine of revolution.

These are strange and dangerous times. An insolvent federal government, an exporting China and India, and an almost complete indifference to federal immigration, tax, and regulatory laws have all combined to create a well-entitled but increasingly angry population, one “empowered” and made more, not less, bitter by the last two years of governance in Washington."

Go Ahead, Make Our Day

"The Obama Administration has resurrected the notion of a per-mile tax on driving our cars. An attempt of this nature would be a 21st century Intolerable Act. Installing a federal tracking device of any sort on our cars and then using it to tax the miles we drive would probably produce an outrage and backlash unlike anything we've seen yet, and I eagerly welcome the Federal Government to try it. It could truly be "a bridge too far" for the forces of the statists.

Imagine the resourcefulness Americans would employ to dodge this tax.  Go ahead, try to place some sort of device in every vehicle in America; see how fast they all accidentally get hit with electromagnets, high voltage, or other unfortunate accidents.  Watch speedometer cables disconnect themselves, watch the young and typically liberal computer geeks of America turn their attention to the destruction of whatever network the government builds to enforce their tax.  Watch auxiliary gas tanks get installed on one vehicle in order to fill others, watch gas cans get filled for lawnmowers every single time a vehicle goes in for a fill.  Watch resourceful red state country boys pull the old pickups from behind their outbuildings and drive them unregistered across the great expanses of flyover country.
