Three kids drowned trapped inside the cabin when their yacht capsized on July 4 in Oyster Bay

Tragic. Sorrowful. Horrible. No doubt about it.

HOWEVER........ the owner of this 34 foot motor yacht allowed TWENTY SEVEN people aboard. That is almost twice as many as nameplate (federal regulation) allows. They reportedly did not have enough (federally required) life vests aboard. It was a nearly 30 year old vessel, with a new (no doubt unfamiliar) skipper........ and all of this will lead to calls for more Federal rules and regulations which will not do a damned bit of good to prevent idiots like this skipper from ignoring those rules (if he even knows about them) and doing idiotic things with innocent friends and family.

As cold hearted as it may seem ..... this is an example of Darwin's Laws of Natural Selection at work. Unfortunately, this idiot skipper has probably already spawned his kin. It is the poor children short-changed.
clipper writes this as a somewhat experienced skipper with over 30,000 nautical miles of skippering his own long range cruising trawler over the course of more than 10 years.
