"Cheney, for example, says that the possibility of another deadly terrorist attack makes it "important to gather intelligence on your enemies."  That is obviously true, but again beside the point, as we are not talking about gathering intelligence on one's enemies, but rather the monitoring of every innocent man, woman, or child who uses a telephone or a computer to contact someone.  Consider, by analogy, a man who believes that his wife may be having an affair, and who therefore hires a private investigator -- not to follow his wife around and see what she is doing, but to catalogue the comings and goings of every man in town, in case one of them should happen to be secretly meeting his wife."     [American Thinker]
